Program Learning Outcomes for Automotive Technology

Program learning outcomes are the knowledge, skills, and abilities that students will achieve before they graduate. The outcomes below were developed by the faculty in Automotive Technology with input from accrediting bodies, advisory committees, employers, etc. This collaboration ensures that the outcomes are relevant for careers that this degree leads to.

Students who graduate with a degree or certificate in automotive technology, which includes an AAS in Automotive Technology, a certificate in Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair, and a short-term certificate in Introduction to Automotive Preventative Maintenance will be able to:

  • Read repair orders, write service recommendations, obtain pertinent vehicle information, and document all problems.
  • Use appropriate tools and equipment to perform maintenance and light repair services according to industry standards.
  • Describe automotive electrical systems including wiring schematics, components, and diagnostic tools.
  • Identify and diagnose electrical problems such as, shorts, opens, and grounds.
  • Perform repairs on advanced automotive systems:
    1. ABS (anti-lock brake systems), and hydraulic braking systems.
    2. Steering and Suspension systems.
    3. Alignments.
    4. Automatic Transmissions & Transaxle systems.
    5. Manual Transmissions/Transaxles and Drivetrain systems.
    6. Engine systems.
    7. Engine Performance systems.
    8. Heating and Air Conditioning systems

Only students who complete the AAS will be considered to have mastery in these program learning outcomes.
