PASCO, Wash. — A completely new recreation facility is in the works at Columbia Basin College (CBC) in Pasco, sparking some excitement among students and athletes.

CBC volleyball player Ciera Hadden said space is limited in the current facility.

"It's just kind of small and the weight room is very small which is sad because we have a lot of athletes that love being here and working out here, so we just needed something new," Hadden said.

Student recreational classes, athletes and intramural teams are left competing for the same space.

"Having the only one gym here, it's competing for practice times sometimes, so having that extra gym and luxury at CBC will be super cool," CBC basketball player Jase Edwards said.

This is all going to change come 2022.

Completely student funded, the new 80,000 square foot building will feature more gym space, multi-purpose educational spaces, a fitness center and eSports facilities.

"We're really looking forward to blowing up student recreation and giving our athletes a chance to practice at the same time which we've never been able to do before," Athletics Director Scott Rogers said.

Once completed, students will be able to use the center for free.

Hadden said even though she won't be here when it's finished, she's excited for her teammates to have a new space.

"They'll want to hang out here more," Hadden said. "They will want to work out more and be more motivated to come to practice and have fun."

Jay Frank with CBC said the facility is expected to be completed in early 2022.

He said they're excited to have a center for all students to use and enjoy.
