Political Science

The study of who gets what, when and how much

The study of societal of institutions, politics and community decision-making

Are you curious about the effects of globalization? Trends in climate change, civil rights and foreign policy? As a student studying Political Science at Columbia Basin College (CBC), you'll learn about the fundamental structures and functions of government and become empowered as a responsible, effective and informed participant in political communities. There are many reasons it may appeal to you such as:

  • You like learning about power.

Political science examines the institutional means through which scarce societal resources are allocated and the processes that make determinations regarding the moral fabric of community life.

  • Political Science is about choices and values.

It combines both normative and descriptive analyses: how power is distributed and for what values or purposes it should be employed.

  • Political Science is about government and citizenship.

This includes the study of the types and branches of government, means of representation, as well as issues of policy formation. Political Science contributes to good citizenship.

  • Political Science is about you.

Political Science encourages habits of mind that are vital for responsible public behavior, whether as a national or community leader, an informed voter, a petitioner or a simple observer.

“The Political Science department is well organized with the additional benefit of having great professors who encourage their students. Classes are fascinating, pushing students to work harder, and they inspire you to think critically about the world we live in. These courses have made my CBC experience even more enjoyable than I had hoped!”
