Dr. Mazur’s artwork addresses social and environmental themes, and he uses photography to explore critical concepts within both natural and urban environments as both a professional artist and photojournalist. Hisphotographic process balances somewhere between document and performance-often using items found within the vicinity of the site to construct a new narrative about a space. The visual aesthetics of traditional American landscape photography often depict a mythological American West-romantic and bountiful in nature. Mazur approaches image making with a similar aesthetic but with an underlying sense of irony. Sublime on the surface, his photographs become an invitation to reflect on our relationship and responsibility with our lived environments, even if their true nature is not immediately apparent.

Dr. Zach Mazur received a BFA in photography at Columbia College Chicago, an MFA at Washington State University where he performed as the Curator of Education and Collections at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art for over a decade, and a PhD in Cultural Studies and Social Thought in Education at Washington State University. Mazur identifies himself as a scholar-artist, and he situates his research within object-based pedagogy, dialogical learning, critically conscious curation, and the role of arts-based methods within a curriculum of care. Recent recognitions include Washington state's Grant for Artists Projects Award, the Pingyao International Photography Exhibition in China, and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Mazur currently runs the photography program at Shoreline Community College where he also teaches courses in studio art and multicultural perspectives in the visual arts.
