PASCO, Wash. – Columbia Basin College has re-opened its Fitness Center to all enrolled students for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down many in-person on-campus services in March of 2020.

Recently, only college athletes and residents of Sunhawk Hall, the college’s on-campus residential facility, have had access to use the workout space, on an appointment basis.

The college has safety measures in place as required by statewide requirements for higher education, including a cap on the number of users who can workout in the facility at once, and masking and social distancing requirements for those who participate.

CBC Director for Student Wellness Alex Thornton says, “It’s definitely an important tool for both mental health and emotional well-being, and providing a space for them to do that at no additional cost is definitely a great service.”

CBC is currently constructing its new Student Recreation Center, which will include an expanded fitness center as well as three gymnasiums, space for eSports, and multi-purpose instructional spaces. Construction is expected to be completed in 2022.
