PASCO, Wash. - Northwest Farm Credit Services has committed a gift in the amount of $135,000 which will be utilized by Columbia Basin College Foundation to support the college’s award-winning Agriculture program.

The money will help purchase equipment for farming operations, add precision control equipment for irrigation, acquire “farm-tough” laptops for student use and redesign the colleges hydroponic greenhouse.

“The support really makes a huge difference to our agriculture program,” says Sandya Kesoju, CBC Director for Agriculture Education, Research & Development. “I firmly believe that the support will provide students with a deeper understanding of the science and technology embedded within modern agricultural production. As the Columbia Basin region is dominated by irrigated agriculture, farming operations with orchard development and irrigation systems such as precision control, automated scheduling, moisture probes and filtration systems will provide students with direct access to the industry’s most common equipment and technologies.  Students will learn how to apply the knowledge learned in the classroom in real-world settings, gaining the valuable hands-on experience desired by today’s agricultural employers.”

“As part of Northwest Farm Credit’s stewardship commitment to improve the lives of our customers, communities, and industries we serve, we are investing funds in education and research across the Northwest,” says Josh Siler, Washington President of Northwest Farm Credit Services. “Columbia Basin College’s agricultural programs and research farms provide students with unique hands-on experiences that prepare students for their careers.  We are excited to invest funds in modernized equipment that will expose them to best practices utilized in the industry, which will further enhance the student experience and positively impact Northwest agriculture.”
