Healthcare interpreting is an emerging profession in the United States, providing equal access to healthcare for individuals with limited English proficiency. Interpreters facilitate communication between patients and their healthcare team to assure that translations are medically accurate and culturally appropriate.
A common misconception is that anyone with a level of bilingualism is capable of interpreting effectively. Although having native-like fluency is a prerequisite, the skills that an interpreter needs to possess must be learned and practiced. The CBC Spanish Medical Interpreting curriculum prepares students who have native-like fluency in English and Spanish to become competent, professional, ethical medical interpreters, ready to enter the workforce.
