<![CDATA[ Golda Meir: From Pogrom to Prime Minister ]]> Date and Time: 9/18/2008 7:00 PM
Location: Central United Protestant Church

Hosted by Ron Kathren

As a child, Golda Meir, knowing the fear of pogroms in Russia, dreamed of a homeland for her people in Palestine. Her dream became a reality in 1921. Golda's continued commitment to her land and to her people was the paragon of human dedication. Her complete involvement, tempered with love, fired by fierce devotion, and a wonderful sense of humor caused the world to know that she was a true mover of mountains. Joan Wolfberg, as Golda, takes you from the pogroms to Milwaukee, Denver, Palestine, and finally to a life in a state of her own - Israel - as Prime Minister.

<![CDATA[ 'Found Missing' - Art Exhibit ]]> Date and Time: 9/29/2008 to 10/3/2008
Campus: Pasco Campus
Location: Esvelt Gallery

September 29 - October 23, 2008
Artist Presentation:
October 2, 6 PM, CBC Theatre
Opening Reception: October 2, 7 PM, Esvelt Gallery

Pullman artists Zachary Mazur and Nickolus Meisel both begin by focusing on what is not there – or at least what is not at first apparent – in a landscape or written text, and create works that find and distill the essence of their missing or abstracted subjects.

Mazur’s photographs of cultural and historical landmarks throughout the rural Palouse region were made by literally turning away from what is considered the monumental subject in order to bring attention to the unobserved details within a distinct public space. This perspective encourages a critical examination of social, cultural, and hierarchical issues and a questioning of the authenticity of how we label the landscape in response to its cultural or historical significance.

Meisel’s sculptural objects redefine the properties of everyday notes, receipts, magazines, newspapers, and books by subtracting what is known, in many cases text or imagery. What evolves is a purely visual abstraction that uncovers a meaning that was there all along, but was too difficult to see through the distractions of language and/or presumptions about image.

Gallery Hours
Mon-Thurs: 8 AM - 8:30 PM
Fri: 8 AM - 4:30 PM

The Esvelt Gallery would like to thank the ASCBC for its support.
These events are brought to you by the CBC Arts & Humanities Division as part of its continuing community enrichment program.

Admission is free and the public is welcome. For more information, call Karin Pierce, Gallery Director, at (509) 542-4864.

<![CDATA[ Wisdom, Weaving, Songs, and Legends ]]> Date and Time: 10/16/2008 7:00 PM
Location: Central United Protestant Church

Hosted by the Friends of the Richland Public Library

Harvest Moon brings together her two loves – traditional basket weaving and storytelling. As her fingers transform natural materials into a beautiful basket, she sings Coastal Salish songs that transition a weaver into what is called the "Basket World." Some simple indigenous instruments are being made for this program. Much like her baskets, Harvest's stories are carefully woven with words that hold a sprinkle of wisdom. They will learn morals, history, and respect. Wearing head-to-toe button blanket regalia, Harvest tells stories such as The Creation of the Mosquitoes and Why it Rains so Much.
