Decision Making

THE WISE CHOICE PROCESS

In the face of any challenge, the six questions below can help you make a responsible decision. If your challenge is emotionally charged, it is helpful to discuss your feelings about the situation with someone first to gain emotional balance.

WHAT'S YOUR PRESENT SITUTATION?
What's the problem or obstacle? Objectively identify the facts of the situation, including how you feel about it.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT TO BE?
If you could create an ideal outcome in the future, what would it be?

DO YOU HAVE A CHOICE HERE?
Yes--always! Don't fall into the trap of believing you have no choices.

WHAT ARE YOUR POSSIBLE CHOICES?
Without evaluating them, make a list of options you could do. You are not obligated to DO any of them. All ideas are worthy of consideration at this point.

WHAT'S THE LIKELY OUTCOME OF EACH CHOICE?
Decide how each choice is likely to turn out. If you don't have enough data, stop and get more.

WHICH CHOICE(S) WILL YOU COMMIT TO?
Which will likely create the most favorable outcome? Which will you act on?

Remember that you can always reevaluate your choices at any time.
