Academic Placement Tests

What is placement testing?

Because we want you to have a successful experience at CBC, we ask students to take a placement test to help you and your advisor choose the starting point in your educational experience. We use assessment programs called ASSET and COMPASS. You cannot "pass" or "fail" the placement test; it is simply a tool to match your present skill level in math, reading and English (writing) with the CBC courses for which you are ready.

Who needs to taken the placement test?

Placement testing is required of all full-time students or of part-time students prior to enrolling in math or English classes. It is also used to qualify for entry to the Running Start Program.

Students who have passed college level English or math classes may submit an official transcript to Admissions for evaluation to waive the testing requirements.

What do I need to do to take the placement test?

1. A CBC admission application must be submitted prior to taking the ASSET/COMPASS.
2. Stop by the Assessment Center in the HUB or call (509) 547-0511 Ext. 2370 or Ext. 2349 to schedule an appointment for the ASSET/COMPASS. Standby is available on any placement testing date. You will need your student I. D.
3. Pay an assessment fee to the cashier. (Fees will be collected by test center staff during the testing session for large testing sessions and off-campus testing sessions only. For those sessions you will need to bring exact change, check or money order to CBC.)
4. Bring your receipt (or exact change, when appropriate), photo identification and two sharpened #2 pencils with you to the testing session.
5. If you think you need accommodations due to a disability, contact The Resource Center at 509-547-0511 Ext. 2252 PRIOR to scheduling your ASSET/COMPASS appointment.

How much time does the placement test take?

The test takes approximately three hours.

How do I prepare for the test?

Study guides are available online at http://www.act.org/asset/pdf/guide.pdf and through the Assessment Center.

When can I take the placement test?

The ASSET/COMPASS tests are offered 2 - 3 times per week at various times. Specific dates and times are available by calling the Assessment Office at 547-0511, X2370 or X2349.
If the date that you desire is filled, you can ask to be placed on a Standby List.

How do I interpret the results of the placement test?

After you have taken the placement test, the Assessment Center will give you the results. You will use these results to build an academic schedule with your advisor. The chart below shows you what courses you could test into.
