Columbia Basin College welding students have a new contribution for the Benton Franklin Fair and Rodeo.
After six weeks, 2 students were able to turn a small graphic into a ten-gauge steel frame showing a bucking horse and a lassoing cowboy for the rodeo entrance at the Benton Franklin Fair.
"I think it's awesome, this is my first time having something like and I get to show off a little bit to my friends and family so it's definitely exciting," said Kyle Wheeler, one of students who welded the archway.
Wheeler said it was fun to make, but there were some challenges along the way.
Getting the measurements appropriate, getting them to the right size and the dimensions so that they all fit on this 30 foot sign here," said Wheeler.
Wheeler along with Nolan Pickett volunteered to work on this welding project and Pickett said over the last few weeks, there were a number of obstacles they faced.
"With thehorse and cowboy we had to redo it because we ended up warping the center of it. The second time, it came out pretty well and then cutting the letters with the plasma and that was a challenge getting used to it but it ended up turning out pretty well," said Pickett.
Welding instrctor Chris Mitchell taught the students most of what they know and he says he couldn't be more proud.
"I'm pretty darn excited," said Mitchell. "A lot of people are going to see this. I hope they sit back and say, "ooh, aww," over it, that'd be nice but most importantly getting these kids out here, that's what it's all about."
CBC welding students have been modifying and repairing various areas of the fairgrounds since 2012 and this is a latest project of an ongoing partnership the college has had with the Benton Franklin Fair and Rodeo.
The metal archway will be installed at the rodeo entrance over the weekend, and everyone will have a chance to see it at the rodeo August 20th-24th.
