Lacey Padilla fouled off 11 pitches during a 19-pitch at bat
in the bottom of the seventh inning before singling to right field to
drive in Miranda Martinez with the winning run during Columbia Basin
College’s 9-8 win Saturday over Olympic Community College in the NWAACC
Preseason Tournament at Columbia Playfield in Richland.
What a way
to open the season for the Hawks, who then shut out Shoreline 10-0 in
the second game thanks in part to a three-run homer by Maddie Chambers
and a three-run double by Caitlyn Stevens.
“I’m pretty happy. We
hit the ball pretty well,” said CBC coach Adrian Ochoa, who wasn’t sure
of the last time he’d seen a player fight off so many pitches in a
single at bat.
“It’s been a long time, if ever,” he said. “I
liked the way we came back. We went down 8-4 and found a way to battle
back with four in the bottom of the seventh. In Game 2 we just hit the
ball hard, and Gabby (Meza) threw a great game.”
Padilla finished
3-for-4 with three RBIs against Olympic, with Ashlen Ayers and Miranda
Martinez each adding three hits. Chambers’ homer led the charge in the
nightcap, but Bailey Walthers, Brenda Rodriguez, and Joanna Quezada each
had two hits while Meza tossed six innings of one-hit ball.
