Ceramic sculptures by Peter Christian Johnson
April 8 – May 2
Artist Presentation and Closing Reception: May 2, 3:00 PM artist presentation in P-201, with a reception following in the gallery.
Oregon artist, Peter Christian Johnson, will present a collection of twelve, large scale ceramic sculptures at the CBC Esvelt Gallery. On May 2, Mr. Johnson will give an artist presentation at 3:00 p.m. in room “P” 201, where he will discuss his work and answer questions. Following the talk there will be a catered closing reception at 4:00 pm in the gallery.
Locally we have seen relics from Hanford’s past and those of the Native Americans. Johnson’s sculptures exist in a similar universe but they are not specific remnants of our cultural past, but an abstracted suggestion of our history. He builds his pieces out of clay and then applies paint and stains to the distressed surfaces. Johnson is able to construct objects that hint at purpose and progression; it is easy to imagine that they are something we ourselves might have built or used. Through his work, he tries to instill a sense of antiquity and a sense of wonder as to the purpose of the individual piece in relation to the larger and yet absent whole.
Peter Johnson is an Associate Professor of Art at Eastern Oregon University; he earned his MFA from Pennsylvania State University and is currently on sabbatical leave at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana. He has exhibited his work across the United States as well as Canada and Australia.
