Ninety six Student Support Services (SSS) TRiO program students and twelve Upward Bound (UB) TRiO participants will be honored at an achievement ceremony, May 29th, 5:30 p.m. at the Country Gentleman Event Center, 9221 W. Clearwater Avenue in Kennewick.
SSS is a federal grant program preparing students from disadvantaged backgrounds (low-income, first-generation, disability or a combination) to obtain higher education. Ninety six SSS students will graduate from CBC in June and transfer to four-year universities.
UB prepares low-income students from Pasco, Chiawana, Prosser, and Connell high schools to become first-generation graduates of post-secondary programs. Thirteen seniors graduate in June and will be the first in their family to attend college this fall.
Awards will be presented to five honorees at the ceremony including Outstanding TRiO alum, Jose Marcial who earned a Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering and will pursue a doctorate degree. In addition, Jose has been a researcher at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for the last five years.
Three TRiO Spirit Awards will be presented to Brettany Green, Erik Reyes, and Denise Villa. Green will transfer to Oregon State University to pursue a degree in zoology. Reyes will attend Washington State University and major in international studies. Villa will go to Heritage University and major in social work.
The outstanding UB Senior will be presented to Edgar Gonzalez. Gonzalez will attend Washington State University and major in civil engineering. These four model students are prime examples that coming from a first-generation, low-income background are not barriers, but instead building blocks to propel TRiO participants forward.
