For the Student
- Distance learning classes are not self-paced
- You should be prepared to do weekly assignments
- You should expect proctored tests throughout the quarter
- You should be prepared to come to the CBC campus to take the tests
- The quality of work expected from you in an online course is no different than any
other course
- Many students will need to take another math course; it is important that this
course prepare you for your next math course
- Should a student be unable to take a proctored test on campus, it is the student’s
responsibility to make arrangements with the instructor for an alternative avenue of
testing that is acceptable to the instructor; some possibilities: a testing center at a
university or community college or through the Mathematics department at a university
or community college
For the Instructor
The instructor needs to be aware of the Higher Education Act of 2008 and its
implications on distance education (see * below). The CBC Mathematics department requires
proctored work for the course. This gives instructors the opportunity to identify the students in the
course and ensure that students follow the directions outlined on the work. You should expect
the same level of quality from an online student as you would from a student in a traditional
format.
The Mathematics department at CBC requires the following:
- Photo ID for all proctored work
- At least 75 percent of the final grade should be based on proctored work
- The final exam is proctored and counts for at least 25 percent of the final grade
- Should a student be unable to take a proctored test on campus, it is the student’s
responsibility to make arrangements with the instructor for an alternative avenue of
testing that is acceptable to the instructor; some possibilities: a testing center at a
university or community college or through the mathematics department at a university
or community college
*The legislation requires accrediting agencies that accredit institutions offering
distance education “to have processes through which the institution establishes that the
student who registers in a distance education course or program is the same student
who participates in and completes the program and receives the academic credit.”
