Beyond EMT and and Intermediate is Paramedic. Paramedic requires substantially more training than EMT-B and represents the advanced life support side of EMS. Paramedic is approximately 18 months in duration and equips the student with the skills necessary to provide advanced life saving care in the out-of-hospital setting. The Paramedic Program starts in January of every odd year. Entrance in to the Paramedic Program is contingent upon successful completion of all following prerequisites, application to the program and to the college for new students, and a competitive interview process.
The Paramedic program is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs of the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).
CoAEMSP has published the 2014 Annual Report for the Columbia Basin College Paramedic Program to provide current and consistent summary information about the CBC Paramedic student/graduate achievements. This includes the results of the three-year review-window average of the outcomes for: national registry written and practical exams, retention, and positive placement.
The EMS department also provides various continuing education opportunities for certified paramedics in the Southeastern Washington region and Oregon. Workshops will also provide various Advanced Life Support continuing education opportunities as required or requested by community officials, (see HSCI course listing).
The goal of the Paramedic Program is to prepare graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary for entry-level paramedic positions in agencies providing pre-hospital emergency services.
Please note there is a change to the Math requirement for both the Paramedic Certificate and the Paramedic AAS Degree which will affect anyone starting the Paramedic pre-requisites in 2015 and beyond. Please see "Getting started in the Paramedic Program” for the most up to date information on the Math requirements.
