Do I need to take FYI?
Students who meet any of
the following criteria must successfully complete FYI during their first quarter
at CBC:
- Degree or certificate seeking
- Enrolled in the Running Start program
- Transferring less than 15 college level credits from a previously
attended college or university that is regionally accredited
- Started attending CBC during or post fall quarter 2004
If you do not fit into any of these categories or are unsure if you need to
complete FYI, please email fyi@columbiabasin.edu.
What happens at FYI?
Students will choose
a section of FYI which fits their schedule. FYI is typically before the start of the quarter. The section of FYI is four days, three hours each day. During those four days, students attend a variation of
seminar, interest modules, and educational planning classes, as well as a campus tour. FYI is
offered in both a hybrid and all online format -- either way new students are
exposed to online learning strategies and strategies to maximize academic success.
During FYI, students meet
first within seminar groups. Seminars are similar to homerooms. Role is
taken and students discuss college expectations, terminology, study
skills, CBC learning outcomes, campus resources, characteristics of successful
students, academic honesty, and how to develop an educational plan. Students also discuss what they have learned in their modules. These seminar
sessions are taught by CBC faculty/staff and will happen at the beginning of
the students' FYI time block.
Students attend an educational
planning session. During this session, students create a quarter by
quarter plan in line with their educational goal. Students are encouraged to
plan all the necessary classes in order to achieve their degree, certificate, or
needed transfer credits.
When is FYI?
FYI classes are offered every
quarter. Please refer to the quarterly class schedule for specific dates and times. Students should be prepared to
complete their FYI requirement before their first quarter at CBC.
How do I register?
Students sign up for
FYI when they register for their first quarter of classes. Class times and line
numbers appear in the quarterly class schedule.
Students requesting a transcript review to forgo the FYI
requirement should make an appointment with a CBC counselor or advisor at least
one month prior to the first quarter in which they plan to enroll.
Why is FYI mandatory?
CBC believes it is
important to assist students in their transition to college. FYI was created to
improve student retention and reduce the number of students on academic
probation. Additionally, the state of Washington requires college and
universities to adopt policies that ensure students enrolled in degree and
certificate programs complete them in a timely manner in order to make the most
efficient use of instructional resources. (SB 5135, passed into law in May
2003.)
What if a student does not complete
FYI?
Students who do not successfully complete FYI will not be
allowed to register for classes the following quarter.
What if I fail FYI?
FYI is a Pass/Fail
course. If a student earns below 90 percent, they earn a failing grade and must take
one of the following three credit courses before the end of their second
quarter: HDEV 100 or HDEV 135.
