Columbia Basin College strives to provide a proactive preventative approach to student behavior that balances the individual needs of the student, faculty, or staff and those of the greater College community. The Vice President for Student Services and the Assistant Dean for Student Conduct and Activities co-chair CBC’s Student Behavior Intervention Team (SBIT) to provide a safe campus environment for our community and foster an institutional culture for sharing information and developing plans of support for students of concern through collaboration, risk assessment, and intervention.
By formalizing an information sharing system, conducting threat assessments, and intervening with students at risk, the SBIT aims to identify patterns of behavior that indicate possible risk or threat to maximize early detection and engagement opportunities.
The SBIT does not replace the disciplinary process, classroom management, or public safety response to incidents. The SBIT works within all College policies and coordinates campus resources to help students achieve success.
The campus community, including ALL faculty, staff, and students, should report concerns of unusual and/or threatening student behavior to the SBIT by submitting the SBIT referral form, even if such behavior is not perceived as a direct threat or an immediate danger.
Who Should Make An SBIT Referral?
ANYONE who feels a student is a threat to themselves and/or the College community, or has concerns about a student’s overall well-being and ability to succeed at the College should make a referral. Your privacy is important to CBC and we will make a strong effort to keep your report and information shared confidential.
The SBIT is not an emergency response team and does not relieve College employees or other members of our community from taking immediate action when the safety and security of the College community or members of the general public are threatened and time is critical.
If this is a life-threatening emergency, please dial 9-1-1. If this is a situation of concern that requires immediate attention, please contact Campus Security at 509-542-4777.
