Iris Breider moved to the Tri-Cities her sophomore year from Wyoming. Her family was one of the original homesteaders settling in at Block 16, Units 52 &53. Working hard on the farm and getting an education were very important to the parents of Iris. They both had limited educations and wanted more for their three children. Her father had to leave school at age 13, but became a successful farmer, rancher, and butcher.
Iris graduated from Pasco High School in 1957 and then enrolled in Columbia Basin College to get a degree in education. Iris would not have been able to get an education without receiving a National Defense Loan, which took her ten years to repay. Iris passed away in 2012, but in her will, she arranged that part of her estate would go to create the Iris Breider Endowed Scholarship through CBC Foundation. Her scholarship provides funds for deserving graduates from the Pasco School District to go to CBC and pursue a degree in education. In establishing this scholarship, Iris was able to honor both her parents and her own commitment to education in perpetuity.
