About 50 students from around the state were at Columbia Basin College Friday and Saturday, taking part in a trade skills competition through Skills USA.
The students competed in automotive services, computer programming, welding, and fabrication, but also took part in challenges for leadership skills, which include prepared speech, job interview, job demonstration, and customer service.
“It gives them the courage, the confidence, as well as the soft and hard skills on top of their education to make themsuccessful,” said Monty Prather, CBC instructor, and state director for Skills USA Washington. “I’ve had many students in the past that were very shy, couldn’t speak, couldn’t do job interviews and things like that, and this has really blossomed them to the point where they can talk in front of people, and represent themselves as who they are, and not that shy person.”
The 55th annual National Skills and Leadership Conference is June 24-28, 2019.
