Walla Walla women 4, CBC 1: In past years, the Warriors have
always had a scoring centerpiece, a lightning rod of offense who can
generate a goal chance at any time and from anywhere.
This season
has been a bit different, though. Forward Tash Anderson leads the team
with 14 goals, but Walla Walla coach Chad Bodnar has relied on his
supporting cast a bit more.
That was evident Saturday, as four
different players scored goals against CBC, who held Walla Walla
scoreless until the 38th minute, when Kahiesha Johnson, a former Hanford
star, redirected a cross from Alli Madril past Nicole Porter for a 1-0
lead.
“We don’t have a Kaylie Winston, so we have to find more ways to score,” Bodnar said.
Johnson is a defender by trade, but Bodnar will rotate her in at forward if he needs a jump on offense.
“We needed somone to start things off, and Alli sent in a really good ball,” Johnson said of her third goal of the year.
The
Warriors came out firing in the second half, as Julie Belden charged
Porter in the Hawks’ 8-yard box on a long service. Belden got her hands
on the ball but collided with Belden, and the ball came loose. Belden
easily knocked the ball into the net for a 2-0 lead in the 47th minute.
CBC
midfielder Alicia Pacheco, a Kamiakin product, made an aggressive run
into the Warriors’ box two minutes later and was fouled by Peyton Moon,
drawing a penalty kick. Kellie Ross converted the kick to cut Walla
Walla’s lead to 2-1.
But the Warriors put the game away with two second-half goals by Marais Hicks and former Southridge star Meghan Sorenson.
“We
just didn’t get it done today,” Hawks coach Matt Mills said. “We played
a good first half, but that first goal in the second half kind of
deflated us.”
Mills praised freshmen Ross and Jasmine Banguis for their play in central defense.
