VELOCITY is now part of the Columbia Basin College Center for Career and Technical Education (CCTE). VELOCITY is a sculpture by Seattle artist, Virginia Paquette, and was commissioned by the Washington Arts Commission which provides art for all new state buildings. The CCTE opened in January of 2012.
Paquette was at CBC today to present her work. She describes VELOCITY as a group of interacting fabricated steel and aluminum shapes. She says:
"My concepts for this work are in response to the technological, mechanical and engineering processes, innovation, and the human endeavor within the building. I feel that the art should reflect the energy, growth, creativity, and enthusiasm that the building holds, and thematically incorporates programs and symbols reflecting processes of technology and learning. The work grows out of, and up into the space. The metals in the work are the metals used in the classroom; the technology is that being taught in the spaces."
The CCTE houses the College's programs in Automotive Technology, Welding, Manufacturing, Nuclear Technology, and Aerospace Technology.
