Federal and State Student Financial Aid regulations require all recipients to maintain satisfactory academic progress in their program of study. The satisfactory progress policy applies to all periods of enrollment at Columbia Basin College regardless of how tuition was paid. Financial Aid recipients who fail to maintain satisfactory academic progress during any quarter will be subject to financial aid probation or cancellation.
Grade Point Average and Credit Load
To achieve satisfactory progress, students must maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative college level grade point average with no less than a 2.0 cumulative college level grade point at the end of the second academic year.
The following requirements apply according to enrollment level at the close of the fifth day of the quarter:

Time Frame
Federal Financial Aid at Columbia Basin College will be awarded for a maximum of 150% of the full-time equivalent quarters required for any degree or certificate program at CBC. (Example: maximum allowed for an Associate of Arts and Science Degree would be nine quarters). State Need Grant will be awarded for a maximum of 125% of quarters required (7.5 quarters for a two-year degree). Transfer credits applying to the degree or program will be included in the maximum time frame. Failure to complete an academic program within the quarter limit will be considered unsatisfactory academic progress and no additional financial aid will be awarded. Extenuating circumstances may be appealed to the Director of Student Financial Services.
Student on Financial Aid Probation
Is eligible to receive financial aid during probation quarter.
Must complete required credits for enrollment status and maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative college evel grade point average by end of probation quarter or will lose financial aid eligibility.
Student on Conditional Probation
Is placed in this status as a result of a petition.
Is eligible to receive financial aid during conditional probation.
Must complete all credits enrolled at fifth day of quarter.
Must achieve at least a 2.0 or P in each class.
Will remain on probation until cumulative college level GPA of 2.0 is achieved
Student on Financial Aid Cancellation
Is not eligible to receive financial aid.
Reinstatement of Financial Aid
1. Successfully complete same enrollment status that resulted in cancellation of aid and earn at least a 2.0 cumulative college level grade point average with funding other than State or Federal student financial aid, or
2. Petition the Financial Services Office. Explain and document circumstances beyond control which caused failure to maintain satisfactory progress. Satisfactory Progress Petition forms are available in the Student Financial Services Office and at www.columbiabasin.edu/finaid/forms. If petition is not approved, see #1 above or meet with the Appeals Committee. Appointments must be made through the Student Financial Services Office. If petition is approved, student will be placed on probation or conditional probation.
A maximum of two petitions per student will be reviewed.
Additional Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Information
Only numerical grades of 0.7 to 4.0 and letter grade "P" count toward completed credits. Grades "0.0", "I", "N", "W", "Y", and Z do not count as completed credits. They dont meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements. The credits are included in the maximum allowable timeframe. Students with "I" grades must follow institutional policy. Noncredit remedial classes are not degree requirements. They are not included in enrollment level and do not apply toward Satisfactory Academic Progress.
The minimum number of credits earned each quarter must apply toward a degree or certificate or be required remedial courses at CBC.
If there is a change in the number of credits earned or grade point average, the probation/cancellation status may be changed. The student must notify Student Financial Services Office of the change.
Two program changes may be funded up to a maximum of 12 quarters of enrollment. Extenuating circumstances may be petitioned.
A maximum of 45 remedial coursework credits may be funded.
Repeating classes may result in failure to complete the degree or certificate within the quarter limit. The highest grade earned will apply toward Satisfactory Academic Progress.
Student Financial Aid Regulations do not provide for academic forgiveness/amnesty even though the school may have such a policy.
Program /Policy/Procedure Change
Federal and State Financial Aid Programs, policies, and procedures are subject to change to comply with legislation and required regulations. Professional judgment may be used for exception to these policies.
