In June of 2006, Columbia Basin College was awarded a $50,000, one-year Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) grant in support of the Transition Mathematics Partnership project. The grant is the second SBCTC grant the college has received in support of this important initiative, which is intended to build math capacity by supporting standards and teachers in high schools and community colleges. CBC plans to collaborate with local K-12 institutions to improve college readiness in math among students, align high school and higher education curricula, provide professional development for math instructors and increase awareness of math readiness in students, parents and educational professionals.
CBC will achieve the following goals:
- Develop partnerships with CBC faculty and K-12 instructors to develop professional development programs;
- Analyze student achievement and school data to coordinate content and resources around three key areas; instruction, teacher preparation and college admissions;
- Develop an outreach and awareness program to address math skill competencies required for college entrance and college success.
This grant is funded by the SBCTC in cooperation with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for one year.
