The Disquisition of Wood and Fiber as Art
Works by Ron and Vicki Gerton
January 11 – February 18, 2010
January 12 Gallery talk and opening reception, at 3:30 p.m. in the Esvelt Gallery.
Ron and Vicki Gerton, an art-making couple who have taught at Columbia Basin College for more than 10 years, will be showing their work in an exhibition called "Disquisition of Wood and Fiber as Art."
Vicki Gerton produces fabric wall pieces and wearable art. She works primarily with silk and wool with the addition of a variety of other material, including metallic threads, beads, and feathers. These cloth pieces are hand dyed and highly patterned. Vicki says "the interplay of various colors is a language in itself and nothing speaks this language better than dyed cloth or fibers." The result is a lush, captivating fabric surface that has both visually and tactile appeal.
Ron Gerton combines cast bronze pieces with wooden vessels to produce highly original sculptures. He also makes large, wall hung pictures assembled from precision cut wooden pieces adhered to a frame. The wood and metal sculptures are influenced by his love of both the Japanese art of the Bonsai plant and Art Noveau. He combines castings of distorted sagebrush from this area with hollow turned wood shapes to create these sculptures.
