Drawings and Ceramics
Elaine Green –Drawings/ Carolyn Nelson- Ceramics
January 9 – February 2, 2012
Opening Reception: January 10, 7:00 PM in the gallery with the artists present
The first exhibition of 2012 in the Esvelt Gallery will feature the charcoal drawings by Elaine Green and ceramic sculptures by Carolyn Nelson. Ms. Nelson, an art professor at Heritage University, will be exhibiting work influenced by the sage steppe landscape and the towering basalt stones that surround the Yakima Valley. Her work integrates the human form with landscape and architectural imagery through the use of muted colors and subtle texture. Her guardian figures are reminiscent of ancient stone sculptures of females filled with lost but compelling meaning. Elaine Green’s drawings explore various transformative states of the most basic units of our world: the human figure, landscape and shelters. Her work looks both strange and familiar, the large scale bodies are sculpted by surgery or weight lifting, the fields burnt, the houses dark and obscuring. Even her medium, charcoal, is itself an incomplete transformation of wood by fire. Hand-rubbing and erasures continue the theme of illumination and obfuscation.
Both artists will be present at the opening reception and the public is encouraged to attend free of charge.
